University of Waterloo – Engineering 7
Education
Waterloo, Ontario
Project Overview
The University of Waterloo Engineering 7 project involved the provision of Building Code consulting services in connection with preparing an Alternative Solution to permit open bridges between the Engineering 5 (E5) and Engineering 7 (E7) buildings. The E7 building at the University of Waterloo is a state-of-the-art, seven-storey, 22,483 m2 building that opened in 2018. It is connected to its sister, the E5 building, by a seven-storey atrium and enclosed pedestrian bridges. Specifically, LRI was requested to provide Building Code consulting services, as they related to the City of Waterloo’s requirements for an Alternative Solution submission.
Key services
Our impact on the project
LRI’s experience with the design of similar post-secondary education building additions and construction projects continues to allow us to help the client achieve the greatest design flexibility to accommodate expansion needs while ensuring compliance with the most stringent Building Code regulations. This enhances the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors who frequent the university building. Through the provision of services, including developing an approach for the Alternative Solution and coordinating with the client for the preparation and submission of the Alternative Solution, LRI assisted the client and the owner in achieving their goals for a necessary revision to the egress system.
