Project Overview

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, also known as the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital project, is an 11-storey building connected to an open-air parking garage. This is the first hospital of its kind in the City of Vaughan and the first smart hospital in Canada. Fully integrated smart technology systems and medical devices are key features of the 111,484 m2 facility. LRI provided Building Code review services to the design team, ensuring that plans to develop the new facility addressed the Life Safety needs of occupants. Through participation in drawing reviews and design team consultations, LRI continued to assist the design team in realizing their aspirations for a long-anticipated, state-of-the-art hospital. LRI leveraged its expertise to conduct a code review of multiple facilities and spaces within the hospital while also providing Fire Safety and emergency management plans and drawings.

Our impact on the project

Using modern and proven best practices, the hospital provides state-of-the-art health care and positive outcomes for patients and their families. Through extensive collaboration with the design team, LRI developed an approach to apply the Building Code that not only met the intended level of safety of the prescriptive Code requirements but also considered the operational needs and requirements of the facility’s users. LRI also facilitated several alternative solutions in the complicated design.  Systems and Fire & Life Safety work included a Fire Safety plan, complex fire alarm sequencing, smoke control, fire department dispatch response and communication protocols. LRI’s experience with the design-build of similar, large-scale hospital projects allowed us to help the design team achieve greater design flexibility for current and possible future adaptations while ensuring compliance with Building Code regulations. We relied heavily on our experience working on over 100 hospitals and Long-Term Care facilities across Canada.
