Matthew Hopley, M.Eng., P.Eng.
Matthew is a seasoned professional with over 13 years of experience in fire and life safety engineering. He joined LRI in 2019 and has since been a valuable asset to the company. Matthew graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. He then pursued a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in fire safety engineering. Matthew leverages his technical background and extensive Alberta market experience to guide and support LRI’s Western Canadian clients in addressing a wide range of fire and life safety challenges. Matthew is a licensed engineer in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, which allows him to provide his services across multiple jurisdictions.

Matthew is a skilled specialist who caters to a diverse clientele. He is responsible for reviewing building and fire code compliance, developing alternative solutions for architecture clients, and negotiating with Authority Having Jurisdictions to achieve successful resolutions. Matthew is also proficient in providing risk-based audits and assessments for fire and life safety elements, including fire sprinkler hazard assessments for industry and insurance clientele. Based in Calgary, he is supported by the wider LRI teams’ experience and expertise, thereby providing high-level, detail-oriented, day-to-day contact for clients in Western Canada. His past project experience includes code compliance reviews and audits, alternative solution and performance-based design analysis, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of fire simulations, and physical smoke testing and commissioning of fire and life safety systems. Matthew also has extensive experience in a wide variety of building types, including high-hazard industrial buildings, breweries and distilleries, large assembly venues, retail shopping centers, offices, and residential projects.
