Experience Profile: McMaster University Medical Centre

LRI assisted McMaster University in the replacement of the fire alarm system at its leading health centre facility.

McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) opened in Hamilton, Ontario in 1972 as a state-of-the-art facility with a focus on highly specialized medical, surgical and research aspects of care. The existing, seven-storey facility contains a building footprint area of more than 93,000 m2. LRI performed an extensive audit of the complex, based upon the retrofit requirements of the Ontario Fire Code (OFC) for health care facilities (OFC Section 9.4). The audit identified issues and options for MUMC to comply with the retrofit requirements. A key finding of the audit concerned the fire alarm system, which lacked required detection and many of the required features and operations mandated by the OFC.

Applying our thorough understanding of fire alarm systems technology and retrofit expertise, LRI provided fire protection engineering services for the replacement of the fire alarm system at MUMC. LRI provided an extensive suite of services, ranging from detailed systems audits and systems engineering/design, to tender specification development, and project management, throughout the installation and acceptance testing phases.

This complex retrofit project was conducted simultaneously with the installation of sprinkler system protection, throughout the entire facility, and an upgrade of the HVAC system, as well as other facility renovations, while maintaining full site occupancy and services.
