Challenge Coins

LRI Challenge Coin

Challenge coins are a time-tested tradition with a rich history. The long-standing practice of giving a challenge coin has evolved into a powerful symbol of membership, recognition, honor, and camaraderie. A challenge coin is a small coin or medallion, bearing an organizations insignia or emblem and carried by the organization’s members.

There are several stories detailing the origins of the challenge coin. The Roman Empire rewarded soldiers by presenting them with coins to recognize their achievements. Challenge coins were also known as “Portrait Medals” during the Renaissance and were often used to commemorate specific events involving royalty, nobility, or other types of well-to-do individuals. The medals would be given as gifts or awards, and people also exchanged them with friends and associates.

Challenge coins are now an integral part of military culture and tradition. The tradition has spread and been adopted by other organizations such as police, fire departments, academic institutions, associations, and organizations.

At LRI we continue the challenge coin tradition to recognize employee achievement, foster team spirit and to commemorate special events.
