This year, LRI Engineering is proud to celebrate an extraordinary milestone: Eric Esselink’s 40th anniversary with the firm.

When Eric joined LRI as a Code Consultant in the summer of 1986, few could have imagined the lasting impact he would have on the company, the profession, and the built environment across Canada and beyond. Four decades later, Eric’s career stands as a testament to technical excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to protecting people through effective fire protection and life safety solutions.

Over the course of his career, Eric has played a key role in some of Canada’s most recognizable and influential projects. His expertise has contributed to landmark facilities including Scotiabank Arena, BMO Field, the Diefenbunker, and the Mirvish Theatres, among many others. Through these projects, Eric has helped ensure that iconic buildings and gathering places meet the highest standards of safety while supporting innovation in design and construction.

His influence reaches far beyond Canada’s borders. Eric has also provided his expertise on international projects, including the Riga Arena, in Latvia and The Bahá’í Temple in Chile. These opportunities reflect both the global demand for his knowledge and the reputation he has built throughout his distinguished career.

In addition to his project work, Eric has been a dedicated contributor to the advancement of the profession itself. Through his participation on national code committees, he has helped shape and advance life safety standards that continue to impact communities across Canada. His contributions have supported the development of building and life safety requirements that help protect millions of people every day.

Eric’s leadership has also left an indelible mark on LRI Engineering as he has helped oversee the operation and growth of the company, guiding the organization through periods of change and opportunity while mentoring colleagues and fostering a culture of excellence. Many current and former team members have benefited from his knowledge, guidance, and willingness to share his experience.

His collaborative approach and commitment to excellence have earned the admiration of clients, peers, and colleagues alike.
