AFTER ACTION REPORTS

What is an After Action Report?

Following an Emergency Exercise/event, a formal report is conducted to summarize the event and discuss the outcome based on the objectives identified within the exercise. This report is known as an After Action Report (AAR), a report that critically analyzes an event and determines recommendations for organizational improvements.

An AAR is conducted by gathering information from the event, such as documents, interviews, or surveys to ascertain participants perspectives. The goal is to identify what went well during the event, what did not go well, and opportunities for improvements where necessary.

The format of the report can depend on the scale of the event, consider summarizing the event, the intended function, identifying the goals and objectives and choosing between a chronological or thematic framework.

Why is an After Action Report so important?

Following an emergency exercise/event a debrief with staff should be conducted to identify any immediate areas of improvement. The AAR formalizes this process and initiates the opportunity to develop the improvements. By identifying and analyzing organizational shortcomings holistic plans can be developed on how to mitigate, prepare for, or prevent emergencies in the future.

The following statements identify why AAR are important to an organization:

  • Learning and Improvement: AARs provide a structured framework for organizations to reflect on their performance after completing a task, project, or mission. They allow for a thorough analysis of what went well, what didn’t go as planned, and what can be learned from the experience. By identifying strengths and weaknesses, organizations can make informed decisions to improve future performance.

They document the details of a particular event or operation, including the context, actions taken, challenges encountered, and lessons learned.   • Best Practices and Standardization: AARs help identify best practices and areas where standardization can be implemented. By examining successful approaches and lessons learned, organizations can develop standardized procedures and guidelines that promote efficiency, effectiveness, and consistency in future operations. This reduces the likelihood of repeating mistakes and improves overall performance.
